The statue by Gordon S. Kray shows this caring Mother reaching down to fallen humanity and pointing to her ascended Son. This is a very unusual depiction of Mary placed here in 1984. The original statue, a traditional rendering, was destroyed by a vandal.

Mosaic below, right panel: Angels hold back the curtains of
time to reveal St. Joachim and St. Ann at the fountain of the
golden gate on the occasion when it was made known to them
that they would have a child, Mary. At the top of the mosaic,
St. Ann presents Mary to the world. The golden gate
symbolizes Mary.

Central panel: Two trees are bound together by a white veil, symbolizing sanctifying grace. This is linked with a blue veil, representing the Blessed Mother. The trees are bent
downward, suggesting that through Our Lady's intercession
grace may be obtained.

The replica of Michelangelo's Pieta is by Felix de Welden, the sculptor of the Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington, VA.

Mosaic below: In the foreground are Isaiah and Micah, prophets of the Incarnation. They draw aside the curtains of time to disclose the fulfillment of their revelations. The central image represents the Tree of Jesse. Jesse is represented as the root from which the House of David arises. King David is shown in the center, and the Blessed Virgin and Divine Infant appear above.
The mosaics were designed by Thomas La Farge, who painted the murals in the Chapel of St. Francis.

Nearby in the niches are
statues of St. Ann...
...and St. Joachim, the mother
and father of Mary.
