English as a Second Language Program
The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program is an all-volunteer program that provides English language instruction to adults (ages 18 and up) during three semesters each year: Fall, Spring and Summer. Language instruction is provided at Level 1 (Beginner) through Level 5 (Advanced) and classes are held at St. Matthew’s Education Center, 1726 N Street, NW. In the seven semesters from Fall 2010 to Fall 2012, the ESL Program provided instruction to 186 students. Sixty-four (64) percent of the students came from 16 countries in Latin America and 36 percent came from 27 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The instruction during this period was provided by 107 volunteers. The average number of students per class level was nine.

The following is information regarding the Summer 2013, Fall 2013, and Spring 2014 semesters:
Summer Semester 2013
The 10-week Summer semester will extend from June 4 to August 7. During this period, classes will be held Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. The focus will be on conversing in English. Language instruction will be provided at Level 1 (Beginner) through Level 5 (Advanced). Students may register, in person, starting June 4, between 6:30 and 8:30pm, at St. Matthew’s Education Center, 1726 N Street, NW. At registration, each student will be assessed to determine the appropriate class level in which he/she will be placed. Student registrations will be accepted until June 18. Fall Semester 2013
The 13-week Fall semester will extend from September 17 to December 12. During this period, classes will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30pm, with optional pre-class tutoring between 6:00 and 6:30pm. Language instruction will be provided at Level 1 (Beginner) through Level 5 (Advanced). Students may register, in person, starting Thursday, September 12, between 6:30 and 8:30pm, at St. Matthew’s Education Center, 1726 N Street, NW. At registration, each student will be assessed to determine the appropriate class level in which he/she will be placed. Student registrations will be accepted until October 8. Spring Semester 2014
The 13-week Spring semester will extend from January 14 to April 10. During this period, classes will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30pm, with optional pre-class tutoring between 6:00 and 6:30pm. Language instruction will be provided at Level 1 (Beginner) through Level 5 (Advanced). Students may register, in person, starting Thursday, January 9, between 6:30 and 8:00pm, at St. Matthew’s Education Center, 1726 N Street, NW. At registration, each student will be assessed to determine the appropriate class level in which he/she will be placed. Student registrations will be accepted until February 11. End of Semester Celebrations
On the last day of each semester, all the students and volunteers of the semester gather in one of the Cathedral’s large conference rooms to celebrate their achievements. During this “End of Semester Celebration”, each student is conferred an official “Certificate of Participation” to acknowledge their participation in the ESL Program. The celebration is a “potluck” event, where each student and volunteer is invited to bring a dish of food, desert, or beverage of their choice to share with their fellow classmates and volunteers. Family members and friends of the semester’s students and volunteers, as well as alumni of the ESL Program (i.e., former students and former volunteers) are welcome to join us for this celebration.
Volunteers Needed for ESL Program –
Teachers, Tutors & Persons of Hospitality
We are looking for volunteers to serve as teachers and persons of hospitality one night per week (Tuesday or Wednesday) in the Summer semester of the ESL Program, which will extend from June 4 to August 7. Please see above for more details. There will be no classes the week of July 4 (Independence Day). While volunteers are not required to have formal training in teaching English as a second language, we expect their native language to be English. Classes for the summer semester are conversation based and will be taught in English only. If you are not comfortable teaching a class on your own, we can pair you with a more experienced teacher. Important: All Summer semester volunteers (new and returning) will be required to attend the pre-semester “Preparation, Planning and Orientation” meeting on Thursday, May 30 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. ESL Program meetings are held at St. Matthew’s Education Center, 1726 N Street, NW.
Programa de Inglés como Segundo Idioma
El Programa de Inglés como Segundo Idioma (ESL, por sus siglas en inglés) es un programa de voluntariado que proporciona enseñanza del idioma inglés para adultos (de 18 años de edad en adelante) durante tres semestres al año: Otoño, Primavera y Verano. Las clases de inglés se imparten desde el Nivel 1 (principiante) hasta el Nivel 5 (avanzado) en el St. Matthew’s Education Center (Centro de Educación de San Mateo), que está ubicado en 1726 N Street, NW. En siete semestres que comprenden de Otoño 2010 a Otoño 2012 el Programa ESL impartió enseñanza a 186 estudiantes. El sesenta y cuatro (64) porciento de los estudiantes provenía de 16 países de América Latina y el 36 porciento provenía de 27 países de Europa, Asia, África y Medio Oriente. El semestre de Verano, con una duración de 10 semanas, será del 4 de junio al 7 de agosto. Durante este periodo las clases se llevarán a cabo los martes y miércoles por la tarde de 6:30 a 8:30 pm. El enfoque será la conversación en Inglés. Las clases serán impartidas desde el Nivel 1 (principiante) hasta el Nivel 5 (avanzado). Los estudiantes pueden inscribirse en persona a partir del 4 de junio, de las 6:30 a las 8:30 pm en el St. Matthew’s Education Center (Centro de Educación de San Mateo), 1726 N Street, NW. Durante la inscripción a cada estudiante se le hará un examen para determinar cuál es su nivel de clase más apropiado. Se aceptará la inscripción de estudiantes hasta el 18 de junio. El costo del semestre, con duración de 10 semanas, es de $25. No habrá clases la semana del 4 de julio, Día de la Independencia. Semestre Otoño 2013
El semestre de Otoño, con una duración de 13 semanas, se impartirá del 17 de septiembre al 12 de diciembre. Durante este periodo las clases se llevarán a cabo los martes, miércoles y jueves por la tarde, de 6:30 a 8:30 pm, con clases previas de asesoría opcional de 6:00 a 6:30 pm. Las clases de inglés serán impartidas desde el Nivel 1 (principiante) hasta el Nivel 5 (avanzado). Los estudiantes pueden inscribirse en persona a partir del jueves 12 de septiembre, de las 6:30 a las 8:30 pm en el St. Matthew’s Education Center (Centro de Educación de San Mateo), que está ubicado en 1726 N Street, NW. Durante la inscripción a cada estudiante se le hará una evaluación para determinar cuál es su nivel de clase más apropiado. Se aceptará la inscripción de estudiantes hasta el 8 de octubre. El costo del semestre, con duración de 13 semanas, es de $40. No habrá clases la semana del 28 de noviembre, Día de Acción de Gracias. Semestre Primavera 2013
El semestre de Primavera, con una duración de 13 semanas, será del 14 de enero al 10 de abril. Durante este periodo las clases se llevarán a cabo los martes, miércoles y jueves por la tarde de 6:30 a 8:30 pm, con clases previas de asesoría opcional de 6:00 a 6:30 pm. Las clases de inglés serán impartidas desde el Nivel 1 (principiante) hasta el Nivel 5 (avanzado). Los estudiantes pueden inscribirse en persona a partir del jueves 9 de enero, de las 6:30 a las 8:00 pm en el St. Matthew’s Education Center (Centro de Educación de San Mateo), 1726 N Street, NW. Durante la inscripción a cada estudiante se le hará un examen para determinar cuál es su nivel de clase más apropiado. Se aceptará la inscripción de estudiantes hasta el 5 de febrero. El costo del semestre, con duración de 14 semanas, es de $40. No habrá clases durante la Semana Santa (es decir, del 24 al 31 de marzo). Festejos de Fin de Semestre
El último día de cada semestre todos los estudiantes y voluntarios del semestre se reúnen en uno de los salones de conferencias de la Catedral para festejar sus logros. Durante este “Festejo de Fin de Semestre” a cada estudiante se le entrega un “Certificado de Asistencia” oficial para reconocer su participación en el Programa ESL. El festejo se conoce como “potluck” donde a cada estudiante y voluntario se le invita a traer un platillo de comida, postre o bebida de su elección para compartirlo con sus compañeros de clase y voluntarios. Los familiares y amigos de los estudiantes y voluntarios del semestre, así como ex alumnos y voluntarios del Programa ESL (es decir, antiguos estudiantes y voluntarios) son bienvenidos para asistir a este festejo.
