The Cathedral Book Club meets on Monday, July 8 from 6:45 to 8pm in the West Conference Room to discuss the short story collection, “The Stories of J.F. Powers.”
Powers stands with Flannery O’Connor and Eudora Welty for giving storytelling an unmistakably American cast. His greatest subject, uniquely his, was the life of thoroughly human priests in Chicago and the Midwest, including “do-gooders, glad handers, wheeler-dealers, petty tyrants, and even the odd saint!” The author’s background included Chicago, Ireland, and teaching at St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota.
Perhaps the book might stand as a bit of background on our new Archbishop!
