Concert with Paul Hardy and the Sunrise String Quartet

On Sunday, February 24 at 3pm, Cathedral Organist Paul Hardy and the Sunrise String Quartet will play two Piano Quintets in a concert that features the cathedral Steinway concert grand piano. The featured works are the Piano Quintet, F minor, Op 34  by Johannes Brahms, and the Piano Quintet, E-flat major, Op 44 by Robert Schumann.

The Brahms quintet is considered one of the most important of his chamber music works. It began life as a string quintet, but also became, for a time, a sonata for two pianos before he settled on the final form which we will hear at this concert. The exuberant quintet by Schumann was composed in 1842 and is considered one of his finest compositions and a major work of nineteenth-century chamber music which revolutionized the genre of piano quintets for future composers.

The concert is free and open to the public.
