Celebrating 185 years serving the people of Washington!
November 6, 2025Celebrating 185 years serving the people of Washington!
Here is an excerpt from Monsignor Jameson reflecting on the anniversary:
"Anywhere you travel in any country, people naturally flock to cathedrals because they appreciate architecture and art, often losing themselves in the beautiful and the sacred. They are also drawn to cathedrals because they are at the center of the city—a place of encounter where much is happening. Being located in one of the most important cities in the world, St. Matthew's has a special role in discerning and serving the spiritual needs of residents of every type who make Washington their home, whether for a season or for a lifetime. As the cathedral church of the Archdiocese of Washington since the latter's creation, St. Matthew's is relatively young. As a parish, however, we have been serving the city of Washington for 185 years. Pope Francis's succinct observation on the Christian life gets at the heart of our mission as a cathedral parish in this capital city: "Hear the word of God and put it into practice. This is the Christian life, nothing more."
