Women Composers Featured
Joy-Leilani Garbutt, Director of Music at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, San Francisco, presents an organ recital at 12:40pm on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, following the 12:10pm Mass. Dr. Garbutt will play works of five distinguished French female composers of the last century—Nadia Boulanger, Cécile Chaminade, Joséphine Boulay, Jeanne Demessieux, and Mel Bonis—perfectly suited to our fine French-Romantic Great Organ.
Meet the Artist
Dr. Joy-Leilani Garbutt is an organist, musicologist, and an ardent advocate for gender-equity in the field of music. She is the co-founder of the Boulanger Initiative, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting music composed by women through performance, education, and commissions. She was awarded a Fulbright scholarship and spent a year in France researching early 20th-century organ music by female composers. Her work amplifying women organists has been twice featured in The New York Times. She studied Arts in Education at The Harvard Graduate School of Education, organ performance at Northwestern University, and holds a Ph.D. in musicology from The Catholic University of America. In addition to an active concert career, she also serves as the Director of Music for St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in San Francisco.
