Mystical Lectures: On the Book of Job
Wednesdays, 7pm – 8:30pm, Great Hall | January 14/21/28 & February 4
The Book of Job wrestles with the question of suffering in the light of faith. Why do we suffer? What can we do about suffering? Job probes these questions with a relentless determination to subvert conventional answers to the question of suffering. We all experience pain, sometimes intense pain that makes us wonder if life is meaningless. Nihilism can appear a wise choice in the face of monumental suffering, calamity, and evil.
The book of Job takes us to the precipice of utter meaninglessness and dives in to discover that the answer to the question of suffering may not be easily reckoned as futile. There is more: the anarchic and incomprehensible MYSTERY of God. A process of transformation reveals itself as piously trite sayings about suffering and evil get stripped away. Along this road, as illusions about life and faith are dispelled, God is revealed – but not without a great, heaving, and purifying struggle.
Join us as we explore the Book of Job beyond bad theology, platitudes, and conventional belief unto the mystical core of this arresting book of scripture.
