A St. Matthew's ESL Success Story

We recently received great news from one of the students in St. Matthew's ESL (English as a Second Language) program, Brazilian Mariana Zanona Guandalini, who is currently a Level 5 student in the program! Mariana (pictured below in the center, with a friend from the ESL program an another from the SSL program) recently sat for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exam and received an excellent score, much higher than the minimum score needed to pursue the Master's degree program she is aiming for.

Ministry to the Sick, Seniors and Homebound

St. Matthew’s Ministry to the Sick, Seniors and Homebound, in conjunction with our Extraordinary Ministers of Communion, works to provide home and assisted living visits with Communion and companionship to seniors, the sick and homebound of our parish. A dozen residents of Thomas House (the Residence at Thomas Circle) typically attend the Sunday Communion Service with Deacon Work. Two additional residents receive visits because they are unable to attend the service. Another three homebound parishioners are visited in their homes.

Catholics Care. Catholics Vote. Learn About Protecting the Poor During the Economic Crisis.

In Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, the U.S. Catholic bishops apply Catholic teaching to many important issues affecting human life and dignity. One issue is "an economic crisis which has devastated lives and livelihoods, increasing national and global unemployment, poverty, and hunger; increasing deficits and debt and the duty to respond in ways which protect those who are poor and vulnerable as well as future generations."
