Remembering Pope John Paul II's 1979 Visit to St. Matthew's

[title]May 18, 2020 marked the centennial of the birth of Pope St. John Paul II, the longest reigning pope in modern history. The milestone has brought to memory the Pope's visit and celebration of Mass at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle on October 6, 1979, when he preached to 1,500 diocesan priests. Our May celebrations include the May 1 Memorial of St. Joseph the Worker, and these special Marian prayers:

  • On Friday, May 1, Archbishop Gregory joined with bishops from across the United States and Canada to reconsecrate the two nations to the maternal care of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary. Watch the video of this prayer service held at the Basilica. Read more in the Catholic Standard.
  • Pope Francis has written a letter of encouragement for the faithful to take up the Rosary in May. It includes Rosary helps and the text of two prayers that he invites us to pray with him at the end of each Rosary. Read Pope Francis' Letter to the Faithful. Print a copy of the two Rosary prayers.
