Fr. Jack Hurley leads a Cathedral Book Club Zoom discussion of "I Came as a Shadow: An Autobiography," by John Thompson, on Thursday, June 17, from 7 to 8pm. A Zoom link to join the discussion will be published the week before the meeting. All are welcome.

The subject book this time is a bit different, but important in its message. It is the story of the recently deceased native Washingtonian whose life on and off the basketball court threw America’s unresolved struggle with racial justice into sharp relief.

This is categorically not just a basketball autobiography but rather about one for five decades at the center of race and sports in America. Duke's coach summed him up as “a one-of-a-kind leader and an absolute treasure.”  At the same time, the Archbishop Carroll High and Providence grad can conclude his acknowledgements “by offering thanks to the Blessed Mother, for always providing me with strength and comfort.”

Former President Clinton here notes “The lessons he leaves behind with this, his final gift to us, are more important than ever.”
